Alcatel to Expand Kosovo Mobile Phone Net

French company Alcatel has won a contract from Kosovo mobile phone company Vala 900 to expand the network in Kosovo to over 700,000 users, an official said Tuesday.
The company will be paid nearly euro19 million (US$24 million) to expand Vala 900's network to also include GPRS, Multi Media Messaging and WAP service, said Seremb Gjergji, Vala spokesman.

Vala 900 is a business unit of Post and Telecom of Kosovo, a publicly owned enterprise in the province. It currently has some 320,000 users, Gjergji said.

Alcatel, which set up the original infrastructure in 2000, was chosen among five companies bidding for the job.

Implementation of the expanded network with the additional services should start by July 2005, he said.
